You may be thinking that the Canon 5d Mark iii has already been out for awhile. Yes, it has! I really wanted to use it as a wedding photographer before I reviewed it. I wanted to really hold it, use its functions during a wedding, and see the detail in post processing. So now after several months I can give you a real opinion based on my experience in wedding photography so far.

Mostly, I was impressed with the ISO capabilities. When I’m shooting a wedding in a low lit church or a dark venue I never use flash. In my wedding photography style, natural light is key. Especially during ceremonies because flash can be distracting. So that ISO bump from the 5d Mark ii to the 5d Mark iii made wonders for me. Let the light in! And this also applies to all other aspects of the wedding day. I pulled off shooting without a flash even during receptions! ISOOO!

Now let’s talk focus points. There’s just so many now! It took me awhile to get adjusted to all the points. Thankfully you can even choose how many to work with so I gradually practiced to the most amount of focus points. Although, I didn’t really see the use of all of them especially for wedding photography because time sensitivity is important. I don’t want to miss a precious moment just because I’m trying to adjust my focus points. So I tend to dial that down to a medium level. I must say though, focusing is much faster now and I like to shoot fast!

The body grip is a little bigger than the mark ii which my tiny hands had to get used to but it was a very subtle difference.

Overall, I love the Canon 5d mark iii. The increase in pixels gives more creativity to cropping than before, the ISO is amaaaaaaaazing, focus is fast, and just like all new things I had to get used to the feel of the grip. I know I didn’t get too technical but really, those were the main points I was looking for in a successor of the 5d mark ii. I shoot video recreationally so I may write another post about that soon!
